The ethmoidal bulla is a raised area located above the edge of the uncinate process of the ethmoid bone in the middle meatus region of the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. It creates a curved opening called the hiatus semilunaris underneath it.

The ethmoid (or ethmoidal) bulla is located superior and posterior to the infundibulum and hiatus semilunaris (see Fig. 1A). A congenitally large ethmoid bulla can therefore encroach on these structures and result in obstruction of the ostiomeatal complex.9

In our study, the drainage pathways are formed by some combination of two of the following: the middle turbinate (MT), the basal lamella of the middle turbinate (BLMT), the uncinate process (UP) and its variations (UPa), the basal lamella of the ethmoidal bulla (BLEB), and the lamina papyracea (LP).

The ethmoidal bulla lacks a distinct posterior wall and therefore is not a separate cell but rather a bony lamella with an air space behind it. From an anatomic perspective, bulla is perhaps not the best term for this structure.
