A gesture associated with the Nazis has a surprising history. But in Germany, there was little doubt about its meaning.

This was not a fascist gesture, they insisted, but a “Roman salute”. Several posted scenes from the 2005-07 TV series Rome, which depicts Roman salutes, as evidence in support of their claim.

The artist Jacques-Louis David is credited with popularising the image. His neoclassical paintings drew heavily on themes from Roman history, with the embellishment of the straight-armed salute.
