There is a required time to arrive for the night program but if we are late ( arriving at Phoenix Airport 2 pm in late December) will they let us in? I’m awaiting response from KPNO

I believe you can get in up to before the actual sunset time but after that you aren’t allowed to drive up the mountain. They are super fussy about stray light spoiling their data gathering. …

I drove down at night with my headlights taped after the night observation program. I was in my RV - so there was a bit of heightened awareness while driving the mile until we could remove the tape from our headlights. Personally, I think driving on the 1 in CA is more anxiety producing. The mountain road to the observatory has very little traffic. From what I recall there were only a few spots on the road that had steep drop offs. Perhaps see if you can find a video of the drive and see if it would be manageable for you.
