Don't need half a day. It is about 10km from Varanasi. The road is good. So the entire trip will take just a few hours. For local site seeing ac taxis would charge you something between 1600 and 2000 rupees (that would be Sarnath as well as most temples in Varanasi).

Its not far from Varanasri , may take 3 hrs for visit , but its depend on yr interesting too . i took last day visit Saranath before i fly back . Sarnath place is not large , u can walk around , read some information from lonely planet . not too complicate :) and there has museum there too , they have detail , stories and some information . easy to understand .
